Sea turtle nesting was documented for the first time in Syria in 1991. In the 13 years that had elapsed since then no further surveys had been undertaken to identify the status of sea turtles nesting in Syria.
The Olympic summer of 2004 saw a re-survey of Syrian beaches...
The Scientific Officer of ARCHELON, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, together with Professor Adib Saad of Tishreen University, Latakia, Syria and Eng. Mohammad Jony, undertook a two-month nest assessment programme together with a fisheries by-catch study and monitoring of sea turtle strandings along the coast of Syria.
